60 pc cast vote in second phase polling

Amidst warnings from Naxals asking people not to vote, the second phase of polling on Friday in 66 Karnataka assembly seats spread across 10 districts was largely peaceful.
An estimated 60.3 per cent voters exercised their franchise, more than seven points below that registered in 2004 elections. The first phase had recorded 63.13 per cent polling in 89 seats of 11 districts. In fact, voters came out in large numbers in Naxal-affected Udupi and Chikmagalur districts where 68 per cent and 63 per cent, respectively, of the electorate voted.

Chief Electoral Officer M N Vidyashankar told reporters later in the evening that Udupi and Dakshina Kannada recorded the highest turnout, while Raichur registered the lowest: 47 per cent.
Shikaripur assembly constituency where former chief ministers S Bangarappa and B S Yeddyurappa have locked horns, recorded 63 per cent voting, the highest in Shimoga district.Naxals had gunned down two persons in Hebri in Udupi district a day before polling, apparently to create fear among the electorate.

In Bellary city, polling was stopped for half an hour when it was found out that the polling officer was not following the mandatory procedures. “The officer was immediately replaced and polling resumed,” the CEO said.Polling was disrupted in Hiriyur (polling station no 93) where a drunkard broke the control unit of the electronic voting machine (EVM). It resumed after the machine was repaired.
