It will not be a comfortable journey on Wednesday for many people who depend on autorickshaws to reach their destinations. The ARDU-CITU has called a strike with support from member autorickshaw drivers. The strike will affect thousands of people who wish to reach their office, college or school on time.
Schools will function normally despite the strike, education department officials said. The BMTC will add 150-200 extra buses to manage extra passenger load due to the strike.
extra buses will ply along all important routes like Majesticbound buses from JP Nagar, Koramangala, City Market, Vijaynagar and Outer Ring Road. The extra buses will run till 10 pm.
In all likelihood, about 30,000 autos are expected to be off the roads. The strike is not being sup
ported by some unions though, and the Auto Drivers Unions’ Federation is one of them.
Private taxi operators are not participating in the strike. Karnataka City Taxi Operators’ Association president T Prabhakar said they were not asked to participate in the strike and city taxis will run on Wednesday.
Rudramurthy, vice-president of Auto Drivers’ Union, said the
strike was to grab the attention of the government on various issues. “We are seeking a check on fuel price rise and harassment by police by registering false cases against the auto drivers,” he said.
The union wants cases registered under automation and simputer records to be closed. They are also seeking yellow ration cards and government-built houses. Rudramurthy said all au
torickshaw unions have assured of participation in the strike. There are around 75,000 autos in the city and around 1,50,000 drivers. Manjunath, president of Adarsha Auto Drivers’ Union (AADU) said they will also support the strike. About 17,000 autos are affiliated to the strikecaller union while about 15,000 are with ARDU.
Banks, LIC employees and several state employees are also likely to go on strike on Wednesday.
