B-1 centres, post offices may soon handle more

If this proposal gets the nod of the ministry of external affairs, then you won’t have to visit the Regional Passport Office (RPO) for any changes to be made in the passport or to sort out problems. You can apply for these changes at Bangalore-One centres and post offices.
Currently, collection points like BangaloreOne centres and post offices do not accept renewal applications of passports with valid visa, adoption issues in case of minors, etc. For these, people have to go to the RPO.
Regional Passport Officer R Ravindra told TOI that a proposal in this regard has been sent to the ministry of external affairs. If cleared, renewal applications and others can be submitted at BangaloreOne centres and post offices.
For non-Bangalore residents, the RPO has been encouraging district passport centres at the offices of the superintendent of police.“This helps people to a large extent. As they submit their applications to the police, they reach the passport office with police verification and this makes our work easy. We have also opened a collection centre in Mangalore DC office. We will have a passport adalat in Mangalore on July 12 to reach out to more people in the vicinity,’’ Ravindra said. The RPO has been getting a good response to online registration. The scheme is more popular among Bangaloreans though the project was intended to help people living outside the city. “Every day, we issue over 120 online tokens. While only 15-20 come from other districts, the rest are Bangaloreans,’’ he said.

The simplification of passport issuance is gradually eliminating brokers near the offices. There are around 75 SpeedPost collection centres, through which the RPO gets 250-300 applications every day. Bangalore-One centres get around 300 applications a day.

Kannada website
The passport office launched its website in Kannada around mid-June. It has evoked a good response. Passport officer Ravindra thought the website would help people who cannot read English. It contains all the pages of the English website and Ravindra is personally involved in the translation. “I think this is a comprehensive website and we have given a link on our original website. We have used Baraha software and received suggestions to use Unicode,’’ Ravindra said. The site can be accessed through a link on www.rpobangalore.gov.in
