There are around 30,000 women working in night shifts in the City in 155 software firms which have sought permission from the Labour Department to provide a level playing field to the fair sex.
There are around 2,000 IT firms in Bangalore, out of which 1,600 are registered with the Department. “Not all IT firms have a BPO or call centre. These 155 firms are either BPOs or call centres,” said Deputy Labour Commissioner, Government of Karnataka, G Manjunath.
Some of the conditions include providing safe transport facilities, shift on rotation basis, pre-employment screening of office cab drivers, etc. “So far we have not received any complaints of breach of conditions. It doesn’t mean that all is well. There are no trade unions. Moreover, which firm will come forward and confess non-compliance. There are only 26 labour inspectors in the department. A routine check is not possible,” Mr Manjunath explained.
