Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

There are a few diseases and conditions that were considered to be rare. However since the IT and BPO revolution a few of these so called rare conditions have unfortunately become rather common. Most of the victims are young adults working in the IT and BPO industry. Most of these conditions can be prevented if there is awareness and with it a few easy precautions can be taken. One such condition is called the “Carpal Tunnel Syndrome”.

What is Carpal Tunnel Syndrome?
Carpal tunnel syndrome is a condition affecting the wrist. The wrist is made of 8 bones called Carpals and these are joined together like a tunnel. Hence the name, Carpal Tunnel; these tunnels are filled with tendons, which help to move your wrist. There is also a nerve that runs inside these tunnels which helps you in your touch. Due to excessive and repetitive movement the tendons grow a protective covering and this forms a swelling. The swelling slowly starts to put pressure on the nerve. The swelling and the pressure on the nerve together is called “CARPAL TUNNEL SYNDROME”
What are the symptoms that you should watch out for?
Initially you would experience a slight tingling sensation in your fingers (especially in the night). As the conditions worsens the sensation increases to disturb your sleep. The strength of your fingers gradually reduces and you will not be able to squeeze objects. If the conditions go all the way to the worst case, there will be complete loss of sensation in the hand. It would become hard to even differentiate between hot and cold.
How is the condition treated?
Absolute rest is very essential if the condition has to be treated successfully. The wrist is usually splinted so that the same repetitive movements are prevented till condition heals. If the condition has progressed to a severe state, surgery would be required to relive the pressure that is created on the nerve due to the swelling. In addition you would also need to take anti-inflammatory medication.
Can this condition be prevented?
Yes, the condition can be prevented with a bit of awareness and a little bit of precaution. Keep your keep board always flat and not slanted. Slanted keyboard will put a lot of strain on your wrists. Take frequent short breaks, rather than one long break. Give your wrists adequate rest. Always stretch your wrists before you begin to type. It would also help if you could do a bit of stretching and massaging during breaks and after work.
