Transformers are often
a shocking sight — a mess of wires and porcelain insulators,
conductors, control systems and other stuff just by the road. But, they
may soon disappear if Bescom gets the required funding from the state
government. Many transformers and control systems in busy areas will be
concealed in neat metal boxes called compact substations.
This
is part of Bescom’s infrastructure development initiative to make
footpaths and other areas safe and decongested. Already, 700 points
have been identified for the five-year project, and at over 176 points,
work is in progress. The places identified are based on
several criteria like arterial roads, substations near busy commercial
establishments and places where there is a space
constraint. The project requires funding of Rs 200 crore and the state
government has sanctioned Rs 60 crore this year. Bescom officials said
compact substations have many advantages over conventional ones, the
most important being safety. Several hazards of open transformers like
sparks flying out and arcing can be reduced to a great extent. Officials
also list several other advantages — they occupy less space and largely
have an automatic tripping mechanism. It is also convenient to operate
during the monsoon as it is completely covered and waterproof. Around
20 compact substations are ready.Bescom managing director
Tushar Girinath, told Times City: “We’ll complete the project by
January 2009. A compact substation is reliable and saves space and
effort.’’ Developed . countries have substations underground but it is
not possible in India due to water seepage and geographical
constraints. Areas identified Anand Rao Circle, Raj
Bhavan, Balepet, Gandhinagar, Okalipuram, Rajajinagar, BSK 2nd Stage,
JP Nagar, BTM Layout, Jayanagar 4th Block and 4th T Block, Mico Layout,
Lakkasandra. User reviews
