Overflowing drains,
flooded houses, long power cuts and fallen trees — the uninvited woes
continue to make their way back into the city as people tried to reach
out for immediate relief measures after the 43.1 mm heavy rain since
late Monday evening.
Blocked drains in Vajpayeenagar and
Madinanagar in Bommanahalli had many residents complaining of severe
flooding. “It took us hectic midnight relief work to drain out the
flooded waters by morning. The MLA was also there on the spot along
with a few residents to inspect the progress of work,’’ BBMP officials
said.
However, there are areas not open for such relief
measures. Several parts of Sahkarnagar remained flooded even on
Tuesday. Despite the comparatively low intensity of rain, parts of
G-Block adjoining the huge stormwater drain behind the big market area
had houses and roads flooded and water-logged.
The flooded areas of
Puttenahalli remained stagnant this time as well. With sumps and houses
inundated, residents were helpless and powerless for hours together
even on Tuesday. Many residents in Ashtalakshmi Layout claim to have
lost hope of seeing any fruitful remedy in the near future.
Traffic was thrown out
of gear after the downpour on Tuesday evening. Commuters were left
stranded for hours together. Home-bound office-goers took shelter under
bridges, which further slowed traffic.
Benniganahalli bridge
near KR Puram saw a huge traffic pile-up. Bannerghatta Road and
Kormanagala 80-Feet Road too witnessed slow moving traffic. The rain
waterlogged arterial roads — Lavelle Road junction and Jayanagar III
Block near Madhavan Park, Kasturba Road, Museum Road and the railway
bridge near Mount Carmel College. ACP traffic (central) K Ishwar Prasad
said commuters taking shelter under bridges slowed down traffic
considerably.
