More than 100 workers,
six JCBs and eight tractors have been pressed into service by the BBMP
Byatarayanapura unit since Sunday evening to provide some relief from
the flooded waters. Split into groups, they were working at various
points in Bhairaweshwara layout, Bens Satya layout, Hennur Gardens and
Sai layout. It has been a week-long work for a few like Rajappa, K N Nagaraj, Murugan, Rudrappa and Dhanashekhar who have been working on clearing the weeds from the storm water drain at the crude bridge on Hennur main road. The heaps of water weeds piled up on the roadside reflect the work done so far. And it still continues. A few other BBMP officials have been checking illegal dumping of garbage at these zones to prevent further encroachment of the drain. Work in these areas starts as early as 6 am and goes on till late night depending on the need. “Not just officials and engineers, this time we have also been working with the association members in these areas, providing the machine and manual labour while they take on the supervision,’’ BBMP joint commissioner (Byatarayanapura) Virupaksha Mysore said. The relief operations include not just the clearing of drains in the interior and desilting of storm water drain but also providing temporary food and shelter to the affected people at a kalyan mantap near Hennur cross. Nearly 2,500 food packets have been distributed so far with more than 500 packets supplied by ISKCON. The minimum monetary compensation to the residents in these areas was Rs 1,000 per affected household. Any further damage to the structure would be compensated based on the engineer’s report. The maximum compensation set under the relief is Rs 10,000. Despite struck by disaster, many residents had little complaints about the relief work. Visited by ministers and local MLA, the residents here got help from a few ex-panchayat members. In addition, various officials from the Bangalore east taluk also visited the areas taking stock of the damage and trying to help them out. User reviews
