Hold BBMP polls in 3 months: HC

The Karnataka High Court has directed the State Government to conduct the much-delayed elections to the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) within the next three months. Disposing of a petition filed by former mayor P R Ramesh, a division bench headed by Chief Justice Cyriac Joseph said the State Government should have taken steps to conduct the elections in accordance with the law.The court criticised the State Government’s decision to extend the service of the administrator as head of the BBMP and said, “Without there being any justification, the process of election is deferred and the administrator is continued, such a situation cannot be permitted or continued as it amounts to the violation of the rule book.”Ramesh, a Congressman, had filed a petition challenging the government’s move to appoint an administrator for the BBMP and sought an interim order to continue the tenure of the existing corporators. The court said the government should take initiative to hold the polls. The term of the then BMP council ended in 2006. Since then, an administrator appointed by the government has been in charge of the administration of the local body.The government has been delaying the elections citing delimitation of wards and preparation of the new reservation roll.The BBMP was formed by merging the erstwhile BMP with seven city municipal councils, one town municipal council and 110 village panchayats. !
