Realising that sports has been neglected in higher primary and highschools, the department has written to government schools asking them to make sports mandatory for an hour in the morning before the commencement of the school and one hour in the evening after school.
The objective is to encourage rural and special sports by making schools use the playgrounds and utilize sports funds, says a circular from the department. Under the special
sports category, students who excel in a particular sport will be trained. Schools have been asked to groom at least two teams each in these two categories. Training expenses could be met from the government fund or from sports fee collected from students.
The onus of ensuring implementation rests with the deputy directors,
Block Education Officers and other inspection officers, who visit the school. At the school level, headmasters will supervise the training. If any physical education teacher is lax, annual increment will be stopped.
Taluk coordinators should visit all schools twice a year and submit a report to the District Superintendent of Physical Education. The DSPE has a bigger role to play. He should organize inter-school sports meets and should also visit 10 schools of each taluk and supervise the training and issue guidelines. At the end of the year, he should give a progress report to the Deputy Director of Physical Education.
Second phase of SSA, which will begin soon, there will be special provision for games and physical education which are related subjects. AGENCIES
