Tamil superstar Rajnikant's televised apology to Kannadigas on Thursday evening had its desired effect. His latest film Kuselan will now be released across the State on Friday, with the Karnataka Rakshana Vedike (KRV) leaders softening their stand against the actor.
A statement by KRV president T A Narayana Gowda summed up the new mood: “Rajnikant has grown in stature by tendering the apology; we have no reason to stop the film now.” But that change in stance came only after Rajni made his statement in all humility, which was telecast by a Kannada channel from Hyderabad.

Rajni owns up
Stating that to err was human and that he too had erred, Rajnikant continued: “I did not intend to hurt Kannadigas. I am with Kannadigas in their aspirations. I had said that anti-social elements who cause damage to public property must be kicked. I did not mean pro-Kannada activists by that. I am not a politician nor an orator. My words have hurt the sentiments of many in Karnataka. The mistake has happened, it won’t repeat,’’ he said.Rajni appealed to KRV leaders T A Narayanagowda, Shivaramegowda and Praveen Shetty to co-operate in the release of Kuselan as scheduled on Friday. “I have learnt a great lesson from Kannadigas. I will not forget it,” he said.
Commenting on his pro-Tamil stand on Hogenekkal issue, Rajni said politics was different from cinema. “Whenever there is an issue, political leaders ask us to support a cause which we have to — as part of Tamil cinema. Even during Hogenekkal protests, Tamil film stars were neither protesting nor favouring the issue. We teamed up only to protest the attack on Tamil cinemas and Tamil community in Karnataka,” he said.

No advance booking
Earlier in the day, Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce (KFCC) president Dr Jayamala tried to broker peace with the KRV activists, but in vain. The KRV demanded a consistent stand from the KFCC while the Chamber insisted that there was no legal provision to stop the film’s release.

Following letters from the KRV to cinemas in the City, 14 theatres, which were scheduled to screen Kuselan on Friday, cancelled all advance bookings on the day. The KRV had told them that they would face dire consequences if the film was released despite their warning.
