Regular Power Cuts Back: Bangalore

lt’s official: load-shedding is back. Brace yourselves for at least two hours of power cut every day.The Bescom, which finalised the schedule on Tuesday for the city as well as Bangalore rural areas, has decided to cut power for two hours in the urban belt and six hours in the rural belt for residential users. The schedule for the urban user will be one hour between 6 am and 10 am and again one hour between 6 pm and 10 pm.

Industrial and commercial feeders in the Bangalore Metropolitan Area too will have to face two hours of loadshedding: it has been scheduled from 10 am to 6 pm for them on rotation. But the worst hit are other two zones that come under Bescom — Bangalore rural area zone and Chitradurga zone. For these areas, power supply to IP sets is about five hours in three phases and six hours in single phase, with 13 hours of power cut.

For the industries and residences in these two zones, load-shedding is for about six hours. There is severe shortage of power supplied to Bescom from load transmission centre. The demand for power is about 2,400 MW to 2,500 MW, but we have got about 1,722 MW. This means there is a shortfall of around 800 MW. So we are distributing the power accordingly.

City required about 1,450 MW of power. But with the recent power shortage due to low generation, they were forced to distribute electricity zonal-wise. The power obtained from load transmission centre is redistributed according to the daily requirements.
Bescom covers about 41,092 sq km with a population of around 1.39 crore in three zones — Bangalore Metropolitan Area, Bangalore Rural and Chitradurga zone. The districts serviced by Bescom are Bangalore Urban, Bangalore Rural, Kolar, Tumkur, Chitradurga, Davanagere, Ramanagaram and Chikkaballapur.
