The results of the SSLC examination held on March 2008 witnessed a decline of 6.84% compared with last year. Reason: tough mathematics paper. The highest number of students to score zero is in mathematics — 285. And the least number of students to score zero is in social science — 36.
However, more than 60% of the students have cleared the exam this year. The overall pass percentage this year is 66.37 compared with last year’s 73.21. As many as 8.39 lakh candidates appeared for the exam conducted from March 31 to April 9 in 2,645 centres across the state. Of these, 5.56 lakh candidates cleared the exam.
The pass percentage of the fresh candidates is 69.63, repeaters is 52.02 and private candidates is 13.26. This year too, the girls have fared better than boys. The overall pass percentage of girls is 69 while boys is 64.14.Districtwise, Chikkodi has taken the top slot with 84.71%, followed by Chitradurga with 79.53% and Udupi with 79.44%. Chitradurga was in the 10th position last year. Bidar has scored the lowest pass percentage with 27.39.

Announcing the results on Sunday, Commissioner of Public Instruction G Kumar Naik told reporters: “The maths paper was difficult and a majority of the students have failed in it. This has affected the overall results.’’On the PU Commissioner citing MCQs in SSLC exam as the reason for the decline in the PU results, Naik said that 2nd PU results are not related to SSLC exam pattern.
