A shocking revelation shows that is Acute shortage of ICU units in Hospitals of Bangalore.Barring Victoria Hospital Rest there are no Quality ICU Units in Government Hospitals. In case emergency where patients require ICU care, doctors advise them to shift to hospitals with ICU facility. Nearly 70% stay back as they can’t afford private hospitals. With no independent operation theatres, the hospital’s six OTs are shared across the specialities, with three allocated for gynaecology and the rest shared between neurology, orthopaedic, forcing the doctors to delay the surgeries. The government has been talking about reducing mortality rate, but Vani Vilas Hospital, catering to women and children for close to a century, doesn’t have an emergency ICU either. A two-bed obstetrics and gynaecology ICU was inaugurated last year. Then health minister R Ashok had announced 50-bed ICU for Vani Vilas Hospital last year, with 20 beds dedicated for accident and emergency. It is still on paper. Most of the hospitals which are more than 100 years old still don’t have an ICU STATE OF GOVT HOSPITALS Funds spent on buildings. Four of Bangalore’s five major government hospitals lack ICU facility.Most funds are spent on constructing buildings which are not an immediate requirement rather than equipping the hospitals with sufficient staff and infrastructure. For instance, the newly built casualty ward at Bowring Hospital is being used as a storehouse! !
