Steelmakers fear the steel industries could face shortage of talented engineers and skilled manpower as more and more students opt for a career in the lucrative information technology (IT) sector.
The apprehension of shortage of skilled engineers in the steel sector came to light when captains in the industry, who were here last weekend to attend an international meet on iron and steel-making expressed fears about an impending crisis."Inspite of having 1,600 engineering colleges in India, there is shortage of engineers required for steel industries," ArcelorMittal's greenfield projects in India CEO Sanak Mishra said on the sidelines of the conference.
Apprehending scarcity of skilled personnel in Orissa, the state government has decided to open ITI in each block.According to steel industry insiders, the requirement of highly skilled engineers could be less as most of the greenfield plants would use the latest technology.
