Vidya Vardhaka Sangha educating millions in Bangalore: Bangalore

From a thatched structure, the Vidya Vardhaka Sangha (VVS) has grown into an institution running reputable educational institutions across the state. Behind this success story is Pandita Raghavendrarao Mundewadi , chairman of VVS' managing committee , who celebrated his 75th birthday on Sunday .

It all began in 1956, when a number of people , mainly government servants, moved to Bangalore from Bombay-Karnataka and settled in Rajajinagar. A year later, they established a school in the area and called it Vidya Vardhaka Sangha.
After joining the committee, Mundewadi worked out various strategies to overcome the financial difficulties. He began publishing souvenirs and soliciting advertisements. In association with Prabhatha Kalavidaru, he would organize drama and dance shows to raise funds. The amount collected helped them pay salaries regularly. It also went towards rent for the school building. In a few years, the Bangalore Development Authority (BDA) sanctioned two half-acre plots - Saptharishi Dhama and Dhruva Dhama. Today, the school functions in a three-storey building.

Mundewadi has tried his hand at teaching too. He was part of the committee which drafted the MBA syllabus for Bangalore University. He also taught management accounts at BU as a visiting professor. The IIM, Bangalore, where he was a regular lecturer, also received the benefit of his expertise.

The Vidya Vardhaka Sangha runs three primary schools, three high schools, three junior colleges and one degree college in Bangalore and Mysore. In Mysore, a primary school, high school and golden jubilee PU college were started in 2007.
